In 1998, the Aged Care
Standards and Accreditation
Agency was appointed by the Department of Health and Ageing as the
accreditation body under the Aged Care
Act 1997. Accreditation is the arrangement established by the
Australian Government to verify that Residential Aged Care Facilities provide
quality care and services for residents. All Residential Aged Care Facilities
must be accredited in order to receive funding from the government through
residential care subsidies.
It is the responsibility of the approved provider of a home to demonstrate that
it meets the Accreditation
Standards which are set out in the Quality of Care Principles 1997.
The process of accreditation is outlined in the Accreditation Grant Principles
2011. Once a Residential Aged Care
Facility is accredited, the approved provider is required to maintain
the Residential Aged Care
Facilities performance against the Accreditation Standards and undertake
continuous improvement.
